Sundial

This photograph of a sundial was taken last month at Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior, AZ. Did you know that the “thing” in the middle that casts the shadow is called a gnomon? My school kids learn about it in science. They do an experiment over the course of a day during which they trace shadows each successive hour cast by a plastic “gnomon.” We always say, “ya mon, gnomon!” Then they can remember what it’s called.
